Today is the first ever "Day of the Luxembourgish Language"

ree

Today we celebrate the European Day of Languages and, for the very first time, the "Day of the Luxembourgish Language"!

The roots of a thousand-year-old language, a living heritage

Lëtzebuergesch is a West Germanic language, derived from Moselle Franconian, a dialect that originated on the banks of the Moselle River in the early Middle Ages ⏳. For over a thousand years, it has been shaped by borders and encounters:

  • German – the framework of its grammar and rhythm.

  • French – abundant contributions in art, law and gastronomy.

  • Dutch & Walloon – subtle touches from trade and migration.

This long alchemy has forged a unique, flexible, melodious language that is deeply Luxembourgish.

Since 24 February 1984, thanks to the Language Law, adopted by the Chamber of Deputies and promulgated by Grand Duke Jean, Lëtzebuergesch has been recognised as the national language of the Grand Duchy of Luxebourg. This decision seals a thousand-year-old heritage and affirms the place of a language capable of surviving the centuries.

🤝 A language that connects, brings people together and builds bridges

The slogan chosen – ‘Schwätz mat – Lëtzebuergesch verbënnt’, ‘Speak with us – Luxembourgish unites’, perfectly illustrates its mission:

  • Unites generations: words passed down from grandparents to grandchildren.

  • Welcomes all backgrounds: everyone, whether born here or from elsewhere, can make it their own.

  • Creates an immediate bond: saying Moien (hello), Villmools Merci (thank you very much) or Äddi (goodbye) already brings a smile, a sense of camaraderie, a conversation.

👉 The full programme is available on the official website of the Ministry of Culture.

Highlights include:

  • Exhibition ‘D'Lëtzebuerger Sprooch(en)’ from 23 September to 14 November 2025 (opening on 26 September at 5 p.m.).

  • Language quiz on 26 September at 7.30 p.m. – friendly, open to all.

  • Pop concert by the Ice Clic children's choir, on 26 September from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., also broadcast live.

  • Live music in Lëtzebuergesch in the evening with Tommek, Nicool and Sixo.

  • Multilingual theatre workshop and readings for all ages.

A first chapter to write together

26 September 2025 is not just a date: it is the starting point of a tradition that is just waiting to grow. Let's make this day a lively and contagious celebration, so that Luxembourgish is spoken, sung and passed on. 💛

📌 Because your culture deserves more than just one day, now is the time to bring it to life ↓ What will you say in Luxembourgish today?
